WHAT’S THE NEWS

THE OLD NEWS ------ For decades, lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender individuals have been mistreated by conservative right-wing Christians. Even after the courts ruled hate crimes to be illegal, character degradation and physical abuse of gays and other minorities have continued with little success of enforcement by local authorities. THE NEW NEWS---- The Supreme Court has recently declared same-sex marriage to be legal. The world has not ended and the doors of Christian churches are still open. THE HEADLINE NEWS ----- Gays are being killed in record numbers in the Middle East by Isis soldiers. They are being beheaded, beaten, hanged, and pushed off the tops of tall buildings. THE SAD NEWS ---- Preachers and political leaders are still advocating similar treatment for gays in America, which is adding fuel to the fire for ill treatment to continue against gays all over the world. Presidential candidates are using techniques of hate against gays to stir up emotions in conservative Christians in an attempt to gain increased numbers in public opinion polls. THE GOOD NEWS ---- According to recent public opinion polls, the majority of Americans support love.

WRONG AGAIN!

On June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court declared same-sex marriage legal in the United States. For some it is still a great surprise that the sun came up today and has risen over 50 times since that historic ruling. So far the world has not ended as was predicted by many preachers and political leaders, therefore, there is only one thing to say to these forecasters of doom—WRONG AGAIN! As of Sunday, the doors to all Christian churches were open with the exception of those black churches that have been burned, not by same-sex couples, but by radical redneck conservatives, a group of individuals who claim to have received a special commission from God to restore White Supremacy.

Of all the rhetoric that was expounded in the First Presidential Debate not one mention was made concerning the burning of black churches. But same-sex marriage was described several times as the evil that is destroying the Christian Church. America is in a sad state of affairs when a group of presidential hopefuls are not capable of recognizing the real problems. We now have living proof that same-sex marriage has not caused any of the so-called evils that were predicted by preachers and political leaders. Wrong; wrong; wrong! How many times must WRONG enter the ears of people before it is recognized as WRONG?

America is a country—if I may be allowed to use a little common sense language—that has become a shining example to the world of having the cart before the horse and trying to direct the cart from the tail end of the horse going in the WRONG direction.

THE IRAN NUCLEAR PLAN

APPROVE IT OR LOSE IT

If, as a presidential candidate, all you have to offer the American people is to tear down rather than build up, it is my opinion that you are not presidential material. In the first Presidential debate, ninety-eight percent of the time was used to describe how to tear down the things that President Obama has struggled to build. The majority of those things, if allowed to pass, would be helpful to the American people.

Anyone who believes that war is better than diplomacy is an individual who darn well knows that their boots will never enter the trenches. As an adult American citizen I strongly object to the tradition of old men sending young men to war. Anyone with one speck of common sense knows that every avenue of diplomacy should be used before the engagement of war. And to listen to the first presidential debate you would think that America is a population of war mongers.

Every nation in the world has agreed to the Iran Nuclear Agreement, with the exception of Israel. There has not been a time in American history when a foreign dignitary was allowed to dictate America’s foreign policy, yet the Republican Party is trying to overrule this constitutional provision. Prime Minister Netanyahu disapproves of the Nuclear Plan because he would much rather allow his young men and women to remain in college and to continue their lifestyle of leisure while America’s young men and women fight his battles for him.

The American Republican Party opposes the agreement because they would rather lead America into another war than admit that the Obama administration is right about anything. They have from the very beginning, with the help of Fox News, found something wrong with every word that has come out of the President’s mouth.

America needs to experience a Great Political Awakening, and it should come sooner rather than later. I trust that American citizens will not allow a group of Congressional lawmakers to engage America in another war until every possible means of diplomacy have been used.

It is a near stroke of negotiated genius that brought China and Russia to agree to the Iran Nuclear Plan. We now have a plan that has been approved by the vast majority of the nations of the world, and we should approve it before we lose it.

AND WE CALLED HIM BROTHER MYERS

I have written a book that tells the story of a famous, country preacher during the years of my growing up experiences in Louisiana. The church was the center of social activities, and this particular young boy spent many hours attending church services. In this book I not only relate some of the popular sermons preached by Brother Myers, but I also give examples of some things that happened in the church that were comical. For example, there was one night, during a serious sermon, that a big, bug got entangled in the hair of one of the sisters. To a nine year old boy comical reactions followed. That same bug began to dip down into the hair of other ladies in the congregation. Many interpreted their reactions as spirit-filled moments, but others saw the bug and knew the real story.

I also tell the story of the yellow jacket that got caught up under the skirt of Miss Nellie on one particular Sunday morning church service. Once again many thought that Miss Nellie’s actions were spirit-filled, but others knew that a yellow jacket was of the stinging type. The most exciting story that I describe is when Sister Simmons shouted during the annual church revival. Regular church members had learned to dodge the bobby pins that flew like bullets through the church when she performed her famous “head jerk,” procedure.

At the end the book I retell the story of White Sunday. It is an emotional story about an African Americn lady who wanted nothing more than her children to learn about Jesus Christ. So she asked permission for her family to attend a white church and sit on the back row. The act of having to ask permission and being forced to sit on the bank row disturbs me even until this day. This reminds me of present day evangelical Christianity, when a gay man is refused membership to a white church. Or when church members refuse to sit by same-sex couples in church, or when a sign is posted on the church door that says, same-sex couples not welcome.

From the beginning of evangelical Christianity in America, very little real Christianity has been portrayed. It is hard to imagine Jesus denying anyone the privilege of listening to his sermons. I speak with disgust, because it still gets under my skin that as a child I was brainwashed to take part in such unchristian edicts.

GOOD MORNING CLASS

The vast majority of the world’s population has spent time in a classroom. Some of that time was interesting but most of the time was boring, some of the time was informative but most was a waste of time. The book GOOD MORNING CLASS is interesting, informative, and at times, emotional. Teachers, parents, and students, can benefit from the information contained within this book.

Most adults have an interest in what goes on inside the classroom. Parents have special concerns that their children are being taught by qualified professional teachers. This book proves what can be accomplished when a professional steps inside a classroom. Professionalism is required for a teacher to create an interesting environment for learning in a classroom filled with thirty or more diverse students. A professional is also required in maintaining order and establishing an informative environment conducive for learning.

Substitute teachers have a more difficult task engaging students in something other than what students call “busy work.” GOOD MORNING CLASS is a story of one day in the life of a substitute teacher who was determined to employ students in some kind of constructive learning other than busy work. In so doing he faced rudeness, criticism, and slander, which he handled in a professional manner. In the end, he gained respect from most of the students and managed to maintain a learning environment.

IT’S NOT ME

Mirror, mirror, answer me,
who is this strange face that I see?
Could it be someone I don’t know,
a different person in a different show?

For Father Time has not stopped,
the hands have moved around the clock,
And now I look and can barely see
the strange face that stares back at me.

But when I look deep into those eyes,
I see the roads and remember the miles.
I see the paths that I have crossed,
and remember the friends who paid the cost.

I read the signs along the way
and heard the many voices say,
so fast the time, so fast the years,
over distance meadows, and rolling hills.

Sunsets, sunrises, I have seen,
many happy times were meant for me.
But death did knock on my front door,
and say to me, “Time is no more.”

The creepy crawlers in the night,
came and tried to take my life.
But I awoke and cried out loud,
“This white sheet is not my shroud!”

There are too many places I’ve never been
and too many faces I’ve never seen.
Great bodies of water I have crossed,
and in a land of needy there were coins to toss.

I’ve talked with the living and held hands with the
dead,
And listened to the spirits play games in my head.
I’ve spoken in languages I did not understand,
and made peace with myself, in a far away land.

I’ve seen people with hands out needing coins to eat,
and watched hunger devour that wasn’t so neat.
I’ve seen people made happy with so little it seemed,
and I’ve learned great lessons about material things.

So if Father Time should say to me,
a little more time I give to thee.
I will use that time preciously.

But if I’m walking my last mile,
I will walk proud and I’ll wear a smile.
“If it’s minutes, if it is hours, if it is days…
I don’t know.”
But one thing’s for certain I’ve enjoyed the show.
