EXPOSED BY THE LIMELIGHT

Although Americans did not go to the polls particularly to vote for Mike Pence, the 2016 presidential election did revitalize his political career. The people of Indiana know more about Mike Pence than the American public. Before he was selected to be Donald Trump’s running mate he was campaigning to be reelected as the governor of the state of Indiana. Public opinion polls showed that it was a tight race between Mike Pence and the democratic candidate John R. Gregg. The approval ratings for Mike had dropped into the low 40’s and over 52% of the citizens of Indiana disapproved of his handling of education and gay rights issues.

Mike Pence is presently basking in the limelight as Donald Trump’s selection for VP. He was handpicked solely to guarantee that Donald Trump would receive the evangelical vote. Mike Pence has a long record of supporting policies that work against women and the LGBT community. Donald Trump knew if he chose a white, homophobic male as his running mate, white Republican Christians would rally behind that decision.

Right-wing, conservative Christians support Mike Pence not because he wants to incarcerate murderers, rapists, and thieves, but because he wants to jail any same-sex couple applying for a marriage license. All they know, and all they want to know about him, is that he hates homosexuals. Mike Pence is the greatest threat to the LGBT communities of any leader in recent history. He is by far the most extreme anti-gay candidate ever to run on a national GOP ticket.

Mike Pence received boos from the audience and cast of the Broadway production “Hamilton” because they knew of his strong stance against human rights issues in the state of Indiana. After the performance actor Brandon Dixon spoke directly to Mike Pence: “We, sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us . . . .”

FACT: In 2013 Mike Pence signed a bill that would put gay couples in jail for simply applying for a marriage license.

He attempted to use anti-gay bigotry as religious liberty. He was willing to jail marriage clerks who supplied a license or clergy who performed the weddings. He spent millions of taxpayers’ dollars to enforce this bill.

FACT: In March of 2015 Mike Pence signed a bill entitled The Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

On the surface this bill appeared to be something beneficial for religion. But in a detailed analysis it proved to be designed primarily to discriminate against LGBT citizens. It was another one of Mike’s attempts to use religion as a disguise for discrimination. From the very beginning this bill provoked an outrage from the general public.

FACT: In 2007 he voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

FACT: As the governor of Indiana he voted against equal pay for women and minorities.

FACT: He voted against raising the minimum wage.

FACT: He publicly stated that smoking cigarettes “DOES NOT KILL.”

FACT: In 2015-2016 Christian ministers stood in pulpits all across America threatening church members with the wrath of God if they did not vote for the Trump-Pence ticket.

Never before in history have preachers taken such an active roll in the election of a US President as they did in the 2016 presidential election. Knowing that the next president would be able to appoint at least three Supreme Court Justices, their main objective was to overthrow the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage and Roe v. Wade. The Marriage Equality Act gives same-sex couples the legal right to marry, and Roe v. Wade gives women the legal right to make a choice pertaining to abortion. Millions of Americans believe it is wrong for Christians to attempt to pass laws that will force religious principals on a free society.

Mike Pence is an advocate of conversion therapy. This therapy is a misguided approach for the cure of homosexuality. All of the nation’s leading professional medical and mental health associations have rejected conversion therapy as unnecessary, ineffective, and dangerous.

Yet Mike Pence has publicly stated he intends to establish conversion therapy centers all across America. When he was governor of Indiana he tried to convert funds used in the prevention of HIV/AIDS to establish conversion therapy centers. California was the first state to pass a law forbidding the use of conversion therapy, and that action now has been followed by many other states.

Mike Pence has shown time and time again that he cannot govern for all the people, but only for the ones that he approves. Americans have in Mile Pence a vicious, smooth talking wolf wrapped in a religious WHITE fleece of sheep’s clothing, and soon he will be just one heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States.

For over two hundred years gay Americans have been beaten, jailed, and murdered for the simple reason of being gay. Thousands of gay individuals have paid the ultimate price with blood so that all LGBT citizens could one day be free. Now Americans have elected a bigot and a homophobe to be the future leaders of the US government. How long will it be before America will be able to live up to the creed of allowing all Americans to be free?

AND WE CALLED HIM BROTHER MYERS

I have written a book that tells the story of a famous, country preacher during the years of my growing up experiences in Louisiana. The church was the center of social activities, and this particular young boy spent many hours attending church services. In this book I not only relate some of the popular sermons preached by Brother Myers, but I also give examples of some things that happened in the church that were comical. For example, there was one night, during a serious sermon, that a big, bug got entangled in the hair of one of the sisters. To a nine year old boy comical reactions followed. That same bug began to dip down into the hair of other ladies in the congregation. Many interpreted their reactions as spirit-filled moments, but others saw the bug and knew the real story.

I also tell the story of the yellow jacket that got caught up under the skirt of Miss Nellie on one particular Sunday morning church service. Once again many thought that Miss Nellie’s actions were spirit-filled, but others knew that a yellow jacket was of the stinging type. The most exciting story that I describe is when Sister Simmons shouted during the annual church revival. Regular church members had learned to dodge the bobby pins that flew like bullets through the church when she performed her famous “head jerk,” procedure.

At the end the book I retell the story of White Sunday. It is an emotional story about an African Americn lady who wanted nothing more than her children to learn about Jesus Christ. So she asked permission for her family to attend a white church and sit on the back row. The act of having to ask permission and being forced to sit on the bank row disturbs me even until this day. This reminds me of present day evangelical Christianity, when a gay man is refused membership to a white church. Or when church members refuse to sit by same-sex couples in church, or when a sign is posted on the church door that says, same-sex couples not welcome.

From the beginning of evangelical Christianity in America, very little real Christianity has been portrayed. It is hard to imagine Jesus denying anyone the privilege of listening to his sermons. I speak with disgust, because it still gets under my skin that as a child I was brainwashed to take part in such unchristian edicts.

GOOD MORNING CLASS

The vast majority of the world’s population has spent time in a classroom. Some of that time was interesting but most of the time was boring, some of the time was informative but most was a waste of time. The book GOOD MORNING CLASS is interesting, informative, and at times, emotional. Teachers, parents, and students, can benefit from the information contained within this book.

Most adults have an interest in what goes on inside the classroom. Parents have special concerns that their children are being taught by qualified professional teachers. This book proves what can be accomplished when a professional steps inside a classroom. Professionalism is required for a teacher to create an interesting environment for learning in a classroom filled with thirty or more diverse students. A professional is also required in maintaining order and establishing an informative environment conducive for learning.

Substitute teachers have a more difficult task engaging students in something other than what students call “busy work.” GOOD MORNING CLASS is a story of one day in the life of a substitute teacher who was determined to employ students in some kind of constructive learning other than busy work. In so doing he faced rudeness, criticism, and slander, which he handled in a professional manner. In the end, he gained respect from most of the students and managed to maintain a learning environment.

IT’S NOT ME

Mirror, mirror, answer me,
who is this strange face that I see?
Could it be someone I don’t know,
a different person in a different show?

For Father Time has not stopped,
the hands have moved around the clock,
And now I look and can barely see
the strange face that stares back at me.

But when I look deep into those eyes,
I see the roads and remember the miles.
I see the paths that I have crossed,
and remember the friends who paid the cost.

I read the signs along the way
and heard the many voices say,
so fast the time, so fast the years,
over distance meadows, and rolling hills.

Sunsets, sunrises, I have seen,
many happy times were meant for me.
But death did knock on my front door,
and say to me, “Time is no more.”

The creepy crawlers in the night,
came and tried to take my life.
But I awoke and cried out loud,
“This white sheet is not my shroud!”

There are too many places I’ve never been
and too many faces I’ve never seen.
Great bodies of water I have crossed,
and in a land of needy there were coins to toss.

I’ve talked with the living and held hands with the
dead,
And listened to the spirits play games in my head.
I’ve spoken in languages I did not understand,
and made peace with myself, in a far away land.

I’ve seen people with hands out needing coins to eat,
and watched hunger devour that wasn’t so neat.
I’ve seen people made happy with so little it seemed,
and I’ve learned great lessons about material things.

So if Father Time should say to me,
a little more time I give to thee.
I will use that time preciously.

But if I’m walking my last mile,
I will walk proud and I’ll wear a smile.
“If it’s minutes, if it is hours, if it is days…
I don’t know.”
But one thing’s for certain I’ve enjoyed the show.
